The Vain of My Existence

…Bridesmaid Dresses

I have seen my brides struggle more with the bridesmaid dresses than the wedding dresses and my experience has been no different. My dress is a bit unique and finding the right dresses to compliment it is proving very difficult…And they must be order by mid May to be in in time. Since I have been in five weddings, I have been beyond determined to find cute dresses that don’t cost a ton that they genuinely like and feel great in.

I schlepped all over town yesterday going to every dress boutique store, the whole time I was going back and forth in thinking, “we’ll get the most gorgeous dresses and really make a statement” though at the top of what I would ask them to spend, verse “I seriously don’t care what you wear just as long as you are up there with me wearing SOMETHING.”

Bride’s where are you at in this? Did you fall in love with a bridesmaid dress? Did you just pick anything that was remotely cute? Do I even NEED to love it?

I think the reason bridesmaid dresses put such a stress on brides is because it is one detail that we could/should not put so much thought into it. (But it’s sooooo hard to let go of it. Don’t I get to make EVERY decision for this shindig?) After all, are people going to see me standing with my bridesmaids and think, “This wedding stinks. Just look at those dresses.”  Will it really affect their experience like the other details will? Like food, the venue, how comfortable they are, how much they enjoy the music. Unless you plan on having one bridesmaids sitting in the middle of each table as the centerpiece, bridesmaid dresses are even less a factor than decor.

Hmm. I may have just convinced myself how much I should not be stressing out over this detail. But in case I fall back into it, will someone put me out of my misery and tell me where you found your super cute and affordable bridesmaid dresses?

And, of course, we can’t have a post without a little something beautiful: a bridal session! Some of you may not be familiar with bridal sessions. Down South, brides get all dressed up in their wedding attire about a month before the wedding to get photos (one big portrait is usually placed by the registry table on the wedding day). Here’s one that caught my eye from Britney at Britney Smith Photography. Check out the rest of the session here. Enjoy!

  1. I LOVE this post!! I felt the same way as you when I was shopping for those, but it really isn’t worth stressing over =) I did get mine at Sposa Bella…but as you already know (my experience was bad). Although A-Net’s got a huge shipment of those in that I really liked when I went there the other day! Instead of me choosing on my own, I brought my matron of honor with me. And if she liked the dress and felt ocmfortable in it, that was the one we chose! My dress color option looked horrible on her, so we picked a new color that matched her personality and skin tone better =)

  2. THANK YOU FOR THIS POST! You have no idea how stressful that experience was for me. I literally said, pick out a dress in this color and show up. For some reason, my mom was mortified that I was letting the girls wear different dresses and fruther more, that I was allowing them to get a dress that wasn’t sold as a “bridesmaid” dress!! Since she had to purchase 2 of the dresses (my little sisters), I had to give in and go to a bridalshop and just pick one out that was affordable (about $99). It’s also a dress cut that will look good on everyone and is more of a cocktail dress than a bridesmaid dress – and satisfied all 7 girls. All and all, I wasn’t crazy about them, but then I said to myself, “self, no one is going to care what these girls wear, the dress is cute enough, and quit trying to convince yourself that they’ll wear them again, because 99% of bridesmaids never wear their dresses again.”

I am giving them some individuality though by picking unique accessories for each of them, letting them pick their own shoes, and letting them make any modifications that they want to the dress. Once you let go, life gets a little easier 🙂

  3. So glad to hear I am not the only one!! Great idea!
